GIANT ATX Bike Review

GIANT ATX bike review

GIANT ATX Bike

This GIANT ATX bike is meant for paved trails with the occasional dirt road. While this bike did not break on the trail there was a lot of room for improvement. We bought this bike for our 9yr old trail rider thinking it would be good enough.
After a few months of riding, I found myself regretting this purchase and wishing we would have bought the STP 26 or the Talon 1.

PROS

  • Frame: ALUXX-Grade Aluminum, the frame, and bike geometry fit him. Our sone is 4’7” and the XS was a good size with the 26” tires.

CONS

  • Fork: SR Suntour M3030A, 75mm, coil spring, QR, preload adjust, Fork worked ok. A higher-quality suspension would have been better for the trail
  • Front Derailleur: Shimano Tourney, chain fell off multiple times over the ridding season. After a few lessons on how to shift up into the big ring to pick the chain back up after it falls off improved the season. This area could use improvement.
  • Rear Derailleur: Shimano Tourney, we had to tune this a few times over the season. It did not shift as crisply as desired. Heard a lot of complaints about it not working while on rides.
  • Brakes: linear-pull, alloy, this area left a lot to be desired. Besides the constant screeching of rim brakes, the stopping power was just not there. If looking for a trail bike disk brakes should not be an option.

Detailed Breakdown of Features Giant ATX

1. Size : 26, XXS, XS, S 27.5: S, M, L, XL

Our son at 4’ 7” rode the XS and the fit was fine.

2. Color : Vibrant Blue or Black

Both are nice-looking colors, ours is blue. We ordered what was available thru Giant to deliver to our local bike shop.

3. Frame : ALUXX-Grade Aluminum

No issues were encountered with the frame. Bike geometry looked ok.

4. Fork : SR Suntour M3030A, 75mm, coil spring, QR, preload adjust

Fork worked ok. A higher-quality suspension would have been better for the trail.

5. Handlebar : GIANT Sport, 25.4

The spacing fit and provided a comfortable ride.

6. Stem : GIANT Sport

All the structural components of this bike worked well.

7. Seat Post : GIANT Sport, 30.9

There were no issues with the adjustability of the post and seat.

8. Saddle : GIANT Sport Custom

No issues with comfort. Our children all ride wearing bike shorts so cannot comment if you are riding without pads.

9. Pedals : Platform

Pedals performed fine; none broke.

10. Shifters : Shimano EF41

There were no problems with the shifter themselves but the derailers left room for improvements.

11. Front Derailleur : Shimano Tourney

The chain fell off multiple times over the ridding season. After a few lessons on how to shift up into the big ring to pick the chain back up after it falls off improved the season. This area could use improvement.

12. Rear Derailleur : Shimano Tourney

We had to tune this a few times over the season. It did not shift as crisply as desired.

13. Brakes : linear-pull, alloy

This area left a lot to be desired. Besides the constant screeching of rim brakes, the stopping power was just not there. If looking for a trail bike disk brakes should not be an option.

14. Brake Levers : Shimano EF41

Had to adjust these several times due to the cables stretching and brakes becoming misaligned.

15. Cassette : Shimano TZ500, 7-speed, 14x34

There were enough gears that by mid-season he could make it up almost all hills.

16. Chain : KMC Z7

We didn’t have any issues

17. Crankset : ProWheel forged alloy, 24/34/42

The crankset was sized appropriately and presented no issues.

18. Bottom Bracket : cartridge

No issues and performed fine

19. Rims : GIANT CH17, alloy

The rims are ok, had to have them straightened on occasions.

20. Hubs : alloy, sealed bearing

There were no issues with hubs, worked well all season

21. Tires : GIANT Quickcross, 26x2.2 or 27.5x2.2

The tires left room for improvement. There are other tire options that would have led to a more comfortable ride.
