GIANT STP 20 FS Bike Review

GIANT STP 20 FS Bike Review

GIANT STP 20 FS Bike

Overall the GIANT STP 20 FS bike is amazing for a rider of this age and size! Our 7-year-old at 4’ tall had a great season of riding thanks in part to this bike. It can be hard to find smaller bikes that are built for the trail and this bike delivered.  I would recommend the STP 20 FS to all with smaller riders that are on the trail and ripping.

PROS

  • Kenda Karma: 20×2.2 tires, these were amazing and gave a comfortable ride. They are comparable to a 29” tubeless tire.
  • ALUXX-Grade Aluminum: great geometry for smaller riders.
  • Tektro HD-J285: hydraulic [F] 180 mm, [R] 160 mm rotors, made for amazing braking ability and didn’t require more strength to brake fast.
  • Shimano CS-HG20: 12×32, had all the gears necessary to allow a smaller rider to make it up most hills on the course.

CONS

  • Shimano REVOSHIFT: it was difficult for him to grip the shifter. This was a constant source of frustration for him. After each ride, I had to work the actual grips back onto the handlebars because they were being twisted off while shifting. I know this sounds a little silly, but it happened every ride even after coaching on how to use the shifters. We removed this style shifter and went to a thumb shifter and life was better for all.

Detailed Breakdown of Features Giant STP 20 FS

1. Size : One size

Fit our 7-year-old at 4’ perfectly

2. Color : Trekking Green

The matte finish looked great

3. Frame : ALUXX-Grade Aluminum

No issues and rode amazing

4. Fork : SR XCT L20, coil, 60 mm, lockout

Great feature and we could not have ridden our trails without it. Never used the lockout.

5. Handlebar : GIANT Sport, alloy, 31.8

The size was great and fit perfectly with no issues

6. Stem : Forged alloy, 0-degree

Perfect fit for his 4′ body size

7. Seat Post : Alloy, 27.2x250

No issues with adjustments

8. Saddle : GIANT Jr. Sport

No issues with comfort. Our children all ride wearing bike shorts so cannot comment if you are riding without pads.

9. Pedals : Platform

Worked fine for the entire year

10. Shifters : Shimano REVOSHIFT

This is the one area I would have changed. It is difficult for children to grip and shift especially on climbs. We have swapped this out for thumb shifters and riding is easier and more fun now.

11. Rear Derailleur : Shimano REVOSHIFT, 1x7

Didn’t run into any issues for the season. The largest issue we had was the chain falling off the front ring on faster downhills with bumps.

12. Brakes : Tektro HD-J285, hydraulic [F] 180 mm, [R] 160 mm rotors

Excellent!!! From flying downhills to sharp hair pin corners never had an issue.

13. Brake Levers : Shimano REVOSHIFT, 1x7

The only issue here is the size. The brakes stand a little far off the handlebars and it is tough for a young child to grip the brakes and the handlebars. Brake levers closer to the bars could allow for one or two-finger braking.

14. Cassette : Shimano CS-HG200, 12x32

Great!!! By mid-season, our child was able to use all the gears and make it up most all hill.

15. Chain : KMC Z7

No issues

16. Crankset : Alloy forged, 30t, 127 mm

The size was a perfect fit for our 4’ child

17. Bottom Bracket : cartridge

No issues and performed fine

18. Rims : GIANT 20", alloy, 28mm inner width

No issues, didn’t have to straighten out at all during the season

19. Hubs : GIANT Disc, 28h, QR, alloy, disc

No issues

20. Tires : Kenda Karma, 20x2.2

This was one of the best things on this bike. These tires gripped the terrain and allowed for a soft ride because of the width. I would compare them to riding on our 29” tubeless tires.
